Fitted clubs from High School to the Masters

Here's what my customers are saying...

David,

My Miura clubs have improved my game in spectacular fashion. The Series 1957 Baby Blades, Precious Edition woods and KM-005 putter, coupled with Susan Young’s superb instruction, have transformed me from a hacker into a golfer. In two months, I’ve dropped my average score by 10+ strokes and am confident that I will soon earn a single digit index.

Susan Young’s patient and thorough guidance has radically improved my iron shots and my putting. Playing my eighteenth round with the new Miura clubs, I broke 80 for the first time. I shot 76 from the tips at San Jose Country Club. The Baby Blades performed like precision instruments. I hit 16 greens in regulation and my tee shot was within 8 feet of the pin on every par 3. On the 174 yard, up-hill, par 3, third hole I hit a beautiful six iron tee shot that dropped and stopped within eight inches of the pin. That was the first of three birdies and two pars on the par 3 holes, including the 209 yard tenth hole. I shot eight pars, including all three par 5’s. I hit 9 of 13 fairways (69%); a vast improvement for me. Twice I was in the bunker on par 4’s and both times had sand-saves using a Miura C-Wedge. The Miura putter is pretty sweet; I had 8 one-putts and only 26 putts for the round without any three-putts.

I really only played two holes poorly (two double bogies). Even my worst hole wasn’t as bad as it appears on the score card. The par 4 twelfth hole is 439 yards severely uphill to a difficult, sharply sloped green. I hit driver straight up the center of the fairway 304 yards. My second shot was a 9-iron to the steeply elevated pin 135 yards away. The shot was directly over the pin and I expected to find my ball on the green near the pin. Unfortunately, I used too much club and flew the green and landed the ball between the roots of a cork oak tree approximately 25 feet beyond and above the pin (about 10 feet off the green). The tree truck and the steep slope prohibited a shot at the pin, so I used my Miura lob wedge to chip the ball laterally, stopping it on the fringe about 40 feet from the cup. I chipped onto the green leaving myself a 20 foot downhill putt with about 5 feet of left-right break. That putt was 3 inches left of the cup and stopped 4 feet downhill. I sank the come-back putt for a double bogie.

My scratch-index playing partner asked two questions that day: “What the heck are those clubs? and “Since when did you learn to play this game?

I just wanted to say thank you so much for fitting my golf clubs. My irons feel so much better, I can hit them 10 to 15 yards longer and straighter! My shots always feel so pure. I love the shaft put into them because they are steel shafts but feel lighter and easier to hit than the graphite shafts that I had before. My driver is going very well. My shots are landing at least 10 yards farther and rolls a lot more than before. I like the shaft in my driver because it is very stable on my downswing so I feel like I can really hit it as hard as I want to. Dear Dr. Grip,

I wanted to send you quick note expressing my appreciation to you for your fine work constructing my custom set of Mizuno golf clubs and the work you did tuning my driver and five metal. This all started when we discovered that the off the shelf set of Titleist irons I had been playing for quite some time were actually an entire inch longer than standard. Given my modest height, it remains a mystery how I could have hit them at all - no doubt I was engaged in some serious in flight swing corrections which partially helped explain my inconsistent performance.

In addition, I had become increasingly frustrated with my handicap trend which continued to move up. I attributed this to lack of practice, lack of play and the inevitable loss of yardage due to age. I had no idea that having a set of clubs build to optimize my swing would make such a difference. In retrospect, it seems so obvious.

Honestly I had been rather skeptical about all this talk about swing speeds, spine alignment, lie, shaft stiffness etc. However, the ultimate proof that this stuff works is in the results. I am including in this email my handicap trend over the last year. Interestingly, this trend line corresponds almost directly to when we switched out the old unfitted, mismatched, off the shelf set for the set you built for me.

We did the irons, we did the wedges, and we did the driver. Everthing was perfect, except the driver. The first set of numbers generated on the computer simply did not convert to the golf course.

Doctor Grip took the driver apart and put it back together based on the second set of numbers from the read outs. Eureka!

When I met David Butler aka Dr. Grip, I had more than 35 years of golfing
behind me, about 30 of those as a single digit handicapper. During all those
years I bought clubs recommended by pros, had them (seemingly) fitted at
golf shops and had them built by club-makers. So I thought I knew a little
bit about the subject and had pretty clear ideas what was right for me. Boy
was I in for a surprise:

During the extensive analytical phase, we found out that my clubs should be
shorter than normal (I thought - if anything - longer) and the ideal swing
weight is D0 (I thought D4 to D6). Now that was pretty revolutionary, but
just the beginning. I had the opportunity to test various shaft/club-head
combinations, and with the help of the launch monitor and analysis of the
resulting data, we found the right combination. We did so much work on all
the clubs (including the putter), that it is impossible for me to tell the
whole story.

The result are golf-clubs, that feel completely natural to me, they are soft
(even though the shafts are stiff) and produce ideal trajectories. I love
these clubs so much, that I use an older set for traveling on airplanes,
because I can't stand the risk of losing them.

At the end of course, no club fitter can replace regular practice and work
on the swing. But even that is so much more fun with clubs one truly enjoys
hitting. Thank you David!

"Bespoke" means custom made, not just off the rack. I used to buy clothes that were generally sized to need only some general tailoring. So long as they looked good I could live with an OK fit. I bought one size fits all socks, and shoes that conformed to the manufacturer's sizes - not mine. Then I got a pair of custom made shoes built and a bespoke suit in London. It made me realize the true value of proper fitting.

That is when I decided to have you build me a bespoke set of golf clubs. I appreciate all the measuring and testing we went through to get just the right fit for me. I now have a set of clubs far more attuned to my game than just buying a set off the rack at a pro shop or you-get-what-you-pay-for-discount golf store. They look good, I enjoy playing them and, while a little more expensive, they cost me a lot less than a pair of shoes and a suit in London.
